Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome, or “IBS,” is a condition that causes abdominal pain and cramps related to bowel movements. A child with IBS can have diarrhea, constipation, or alternate between diarrhea and constipation. Bloating and gas can also be present.
Conventional treatment of IBS usually includes keeping a food diary to track which foods make the child’s symptoms better or worse and a 2-week trial of a dairy-free diet. Studies have shown exercise can improve IBS symptoms. Other treatments include counseling and medications for diarrhea, constipation, and cramping. Sometimes the pain is treated with low-dose antidepressant medicines.
Dr. Sue’s comprehensive approach pieced together the pieces of the puzzle for me that I couldn’t between our pediatrician and lots of reading! The testing she did made sense and the results helped me better understand my son’s health needs.” – Carly Elia
