Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) causes inflammation in the digestive tract. It has two subtypes: ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn disease (CD). Ulcerative colitis affects the colon. Whereas Crohn disease can involve any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus.
Symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease can include:
- Loose stools
- Bloody diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Fever
- Weight loss
- Growth failure
- Anemia
- Arthritis
- Delayed onset of puberty
Small bowel imaging and colonoscopy help classify the inflammatory bowel disease into CD or UC subtypes.
Conventional treatment of inflammatory bowel disease includes medication and sometimes surgery.
“Dr. Sue’s comprehensive approach pieced together the pieces of the puzzle for me that I couldn’t between our pediatrician and lots of reading! The testing she did made sense and the results helped me better understand my son’s health needs.” – Carly Elia
