Gastritis & GERD
Acid irritating the lining of the stomach is called gastritis. GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is when acid in the stomach backs up into the throat, irritating the lining of the esophagus – the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.
A child with gastritis may:
- Have an upset stomach
- Feel nauseous or bloated
- Feel a burning sensation in the stomach
- Not want to eat, or
- Eat a few bites and feel full
A child with GERD may:
- Vomit
- Taste stomach acid in the mouth
- Feel burning in the chest (“heartburn”)
- Have an upset stomach
- Not want to eat, or
- Lose weight
Conventional treatment of gastritis or GERD usually involves medications (antacids, histamine blockers, or proton pump inhibitors) that reduce or block stomach acid.
“Helping our son with acid reflux was stressful. The tests Dr. Sue ran provided clear answers. I realized her health plan was working when our son’s reflux resolved. Consistency of supplementation is our ongoing struggle, but seeing his test results improve with supplementation is so encouraging. I’m thankful we were referred to Dr. Sue and now feel that resolution is achievable.” – Kate Klaty
“Trying to help my son with reflux was frustrating and overwhelming. With Dr. Sue we finally got answers. We knew her health plan was working when his temperament improved and we could stop the reflux meds. Now it’s easy to enjoy being a mother and enjoy him.” – Brandi T.
