Celiac Disease
A child with celiac disease has a hard time breaking down a protein called gluten, found in wheat, rye, and barley. An immune reaction to gluten causes inflammation of the lining of the small intestine, preventing proper absorption of nutrients from food or malabsorption.
Common symptoms of celiac disease include:
- Belly pain
- Bloating
- Diarrhea
- Gas
- Fatty Bowel movements that float
- Weight loss
- Decreased appetite
- Slow growth
Celiac disease can also cause osteoporosis and anemia.
The mainstay of treatment is a strict gluten-free diet.
“Dr. Sue’s comprehensive approach pieced together the pieces of the puzzle for me that I couldn’t between our pediatrician and lots of reading! The testing she did made sense and the results helped me better understand my son’s health needs.” – Carly Elia
