Every year parents ask me, “what sunscreen and/or bug repellent do you recommend?” I wish I could get through summer without slathering on “the white stuff” or spraying anything but water on my kiddos – but sunburn and mosquitoes are a part of summer.
When it comes to sunscreen, both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide can be used in sunscreens to give it SPF, but zinc oxide is considered to be the superior choice according to the experts because it is more stable in sunlight and provides greater protection from UVA rays than titanium oxide. Zinc oxide functions by creating a skin barrier and physically reflecting the sun’s rays. When zinc oxide is chelated with amino acids, it significantly boosts UVA and SPF protection. That’s the type of zinc oxide found in 3rd Rock Sunblock® Natural Organic Zinc Sunscreen, the sunscreen my family has been using for years. Learn more about the ingredients here.
As the girls get older they’re fighting “the white stuff”. You can’t win every battle, so sometimes they’ll use Alba’s SPF50 sunscreen. Though it’s free of artificial colors, synthetic fragrances, parabens, phthalates, oxybenzone, octinoxate and harmful sulfates, it still contains concerning ingredients that have been linked to allergies/immunotoxicity. You can look up your current sunscreen on the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database here.
When it comes to bug spray, I want something without harmful chemicals. This summer we’ll be warding off those hungry mosquitoes with doTERRA TerraShield® essential oil concentrate.
MEET DR. LISA PROFERA (rhymes with doTERRA)
Lisa Profera, MD did her residency at the University of Michigan and has worked as a pediatrician in Ann Arbor for twenty-three years. She’s recently discovered her passion for the latest research on essential oils and how they can positively impact health. Turns out the research supports the essential oil found in doTERRA TerraShield.
“The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends Lemon Eucalyptus Oil as an alternative to DEET (a known neurotoxin) or Picardin (which kills fish). However, they only promote brands that are registered with the FDA such as “Repel” and “Off Botanicals.” Unfortunately, the Lemon Eucalyptus oil found in these brands is a synthetic copy; not a pure, whole essential oil as mother-nature intended. We know that whole oils work better than their isolated constituents. Most other brands of “Natural” or “Organic” bug repellants have water or alcohol as their first ingredient, so you are paying a lot of money for inferior ingredients which evaporate quickly from the skin. The oils in doTERRA TerraShield stay on the skin longer (3-6 hours), so re-applications are not needed as often.” – Dr. Lisa Profera
If you are new to essential oils or want to learn more, connect with Dr. Lisa by emailing her at email@example.com. She sends amazing emails packed full of the latest research, tips and recipes.
MEET RIED aka “Holistic on Hand” Mama
Ried first started working with me on behalf of her daughter four years ago. She is the inspiration behind “Holistic on Hand” so you can have holistic solutions on hand when you need them for your child. Ried most recently shared how she started using doTERRA TerraShield for bug repellant.
“So I got my bottle of doTERRA TerraShield and mixed up a small amount to try. It is best to use glass bottles with essential oils, so I cleaned out one of the empty Solray-D blue glass spray bottles and started with a small test batch – 20 drops of TerraShield and then filled the bottle up with filtered water. (NOTE: You can also use Fractionated Coconut Oil too and you don’t have to reapply as much.) It worked for us and we are super sensitive to chemicals and bug bites! Now I am going to make a few bottles to stash in my car, purse, and bag for the park so we are ready at all times to keep the bugs away. Yay!”
I invite people I trust and respect to share tips, tricks & tools for living a balanced family life. Instead of searching through old emails, find the answers at your fingertips under the RESOURCES tab. The goal is to get you the information you need and take one more thing off your to-do list. Please submit any burning questions you have about living a balanced family life to firstname.lastname@example.org with the SUBJECT: Holistic on Hand Suggestion.
